It's disappointing to say the least. I had hoped I could wait for another blow-out on Amazon----$24.99 for an RCA Superadio---and I add a spoon for .99 cents and get free shipping on the order----and have a new Super Radio to go along with my GE Super Radio I. But alas----looks like if I want the III., it'll be a used GE on E-Bay, tar and nicotine goop for me to clean off, lies about the condition, etc. Oh well, if it plays, and it works, it's better than buying an RCA with the Superadio cabinet and not much else. I'd rather the guts be the real thing even if the exterior isn't perfect.

Carey,

Same thing with me. I picked up a clean SR II 3 or 4 years ago, and it is easily the best portable I have for sensitivity, selectivity and pure listening pleasure, especially on FM, which is about all i listen to. The 2-speaker audio is just superb. The SR II sounds like a much larger, room-filling table radio for music.

I always liked the all-black look of the SR III and ordered an RCA branded version a few months after picking up the SR II. The RCA III was much as you describe it; in a word, horrible on all levels. Sent it back, got a second. Same thing. Total POS. So I returned it, too.

Last summer, I bought a SR III/GE branded one on eBay from a seller only 50 miles down the road in Salem, OR. He described it as Like New, and it was. Super clean, near mint, not a single cosmetic flaw. As I recall, I paid something like $60, shipped for it. It is in every way the equal of my SR II.

So, yes, it seems that the RCA and GE IIIs are, despite identical appearances, two entirely different species.

I have seen the positive RCA reviews on Amazon, but frankly.... I don't buy it. I question whether these buyers were more tolerant of the RCA SR3 defects rather than being familiar to the GE alternative. If there is anyone out there who has an RCA and it is up to snuff, would love to hear from them. It seems -by design- there is no way to sift the technological wheat from the chaff.
