Here's something I've never seen: A GE Super Radio "Cub" http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vintage-General-Electric-GE-Model-7-2881C-Superadio-Cub-s-/140994225314?pt=US_Portable_Stereos_Boomboxes&hash=item20d3e924a2

That 5268 is intense; three-way speakers, full EQ, mechanical meters..

Yes, you have, Jeff:

Thanks, Keith.

Drive-In-Freak

The Cub isn't in the Superadio family. it's just a standard superhet with a smallish AM/MW loopcoil, longer than average FM whip, bigger amplifier, and a large speaker. It sounds good, and reception is alright, but it's not top notch.

As long as you're not trying to sniff out hard to pull in DX it's a fine radio....just not a Superadio.

Unfortunally for you, I bid in that same radio you are thinking of buying in ebay, but now I know you want it I won´t fight back, it`s yours, my highest bid was 100 dls. I repeat won´t fight back. I only hope you make a good review of it.

Wasn't this the radio you were thinking of buying ?

Sorry for the delay. No, that's not it.

I'll let the cat out of the bag. The one I was after is this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300913065332

It's a GE 3-5266A (also sold as 3-5266B).
IN case someone should run into this after that link is down it looks like this:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/driveinfreak/T2eC16dHJGYFFlFO48cgBRpqLlzLVg60_57.jpg

Again sorry to hold back that information on everybody, but I wanted one of those badly, and they're extremely hard to find.

The really odd thing about that one is that there's no mention of it being a Superdaio on the case at all, so very few people know about it, but the box it came in says "Transportable Music System w/ Superadio Tuner". Also it has this:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/driveinfreak/SR3-5266coil.jpg
(yes, that's an SR coil) hidden behind the dial pannel. You can't see it from inside at all. The only way you'd know it was there is if you pulled the dial panel of of the front of it, and that's snapped into place (no screws..you have to literally pry it off).
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/driveinfreak/SR3-5266coil2.jpg
It's as if GE did their best to hide what it actually is. The other two stereo models have "Superadio Series" and "Super Stereo" plainly marked on their cases.

Here's the inside (including the coil) of the 3-5268, if anyone wants a look:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/driveinfreak/supercoil.jpg
Sorry it's a bit out of focus.

StarHalo

So which sounds better, the 5268 or the 5266?

Drive-In-Freak

5286 ("Superadio Series") for sure.
It has ported speaker enclosures and good quality speakers. Personally I think it's one of the best sounding boxes ever built, and over the years I've had my hands on a lot of them.

The 3-6000B ("Super Stereo") is no slouch either. It sounds like a Superadio 2 only in stereo and with twice the amount of output power per channel.

The 3-5266A is the lesser of the three stereo models, but still delivers the goods. It's not bad at all (I'd say a bit better than your average box), but it doesn't quite have the punch of the other two.

The sound of the mono "Superadio with Tape" (3-5280) Is lackluster do to it having a smaller speaker. All three of the standard Superadios have better sound than it does.

As far as reception goes these models are some of the best portables ever built. I'd put them up against anything available today and they'll come out on top. I know that's a bold statement, but it's true.

This one seems to have all the signs of a goodie:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1980s-GE-GENERAL-ELECTRIC-3-5265A-AM-FM-STEREO-CASSETTE-MUSIC-SYSTEM-/111103626069?pt=US_Portable_Stereos_Boomboxes&hash=item19de4acb55

Any thoughts? Sure looks like the real deal.

Drive-In-Freak

That one's not a Superadio ( the only real ones are the standard three, digital Superadio +, and the ones above.
GE did make some really good ones without the SR tuner (such as the "Blockbuster" a.k.a. Realistic SCR-8), but unfortunately that's not one of them. From what I remember it's an okay little box, but unfortunately that's one of the lesser lower powered units.

Drive-In-Freak

Oh, and just for the record:

I see that one has antenna terminals on the back...something all but the early runs of the original SR have. I can understand how one might think it's one. What gives it away is that it's missing one thing every Superadio has. There's no a.f.c. switch.
What about the one marked "ALC"? That's short for automatic level control. It's a compressor for the tape deck.

Ed

I know this is an old thread, but I obtained a GE 3-5266B stereo boombox - the one with aux and phono inputs, and am about to start the restore, should be done by next week. I got it fully intact, just filthy and some questionable switchery...look for it when done
