Thanks, Paul:
As was reported here, CCrane has fixed the medium wave AGC issue on the CC Pocket Radio (item # CCPKT selling for $59.95 on their site).
I wrote to them asking about how can one tell the difference between the old, and updated models. This is their reply:
The easiest way to determine if the CC Pocket Radio (item # CCPKT for $59.95):http://www.ccrane.com/radios/pocket-radios/cc-pocket-radio.aspx has the upgraded MW AGC is to look at the round push button presets on the front of the radio. If they are blank then they are from our first shipment. If the round push button presets are numbered the radio has all the updates.
Cool, thanks! I bought mine from Amazon about 2 months ago, I saved shipping so it was a few dollars cheaper there. Now I know I got the upgraded model.
I do like the radio very much, by the way. It replaced by Yellow Sangean pocket radio as my in-bed radio, for several reasons, most notably the direct presets and better selectivity for chasing signals late at night.

I just bought an upograded one from C. Crane (I had bought one of the first Pocket models in December). AM reception (or at least AGC) is substantially improved. Now I think it can really be said that it's one of those rare radios that performs well on both AM and FM.
