Funny, the under $20.00 (shipping included) Emerson weather radio I keep in my bathroom hasn't had that problem yet----or any other problem----and it's used every day in a high humidity environment and has been splashed with toothpaste fairly consistently too. Someone might want to check with Sangean to see if the Chinese quality control at their factory is quite as good as the Chinese quality control at the factory that's bought the license for the Emerson name.

Ron Anderson

To be fair to Sangean, I've used its excellent H201 shower radio for a few years and it's operated flawlessly, even while being subjected to the harsh conditions of my shower. So this may well be just a quality control problem with the WR-5 model specifically; the rotary volume dial may have some design issues (it seems like cheaply made plastic) that are possible ticking time-bombs for failure.

Angelo, have you put your Sony MR radio through it's AM paces yet? Curious as to your thoughts. As I stated earlier, the 9100 version I owned had much better than average sensitivity. How does the 9300 stack up?

Ed S.

Isn't this similar to the "hotel setting" volume problem we've seen in some other radios? ...the Boston Acoustics, I think. What was the procedure to reset the volume control again?

Angelo

Dave: No, I haven't played with that radio since I wrote the review. I will see if I can try it out tomorrow night----or when I'm back from travel.

Ron Anderson

Ed -- I'm not sure that this is a problem that can be easily reset by the consumer. It seems to be a mechanical problem, rather than a software one. That said, I have tried to unplug the radio and remove the battery backup, with the hopes of restoring it to the originally factory state. When I turn it back on, the volume knob does seem to work momentarily. Then in a day or two, it reverts back to the problem. I have only tried this "reset" once so I'm not sure if it's always going to exhibit this behavior. I should try it again tonight and see what happens!
