I don't know that much about marketing. Seems watch enthusiasts are grass roots and they have their forums. People know the best bang for buck is the 500 dollar Seiko Sumo and under 1,500 is the Orient Saturation Diver.

Angelo, the Invicta MSRPs are bogus. Even at big watch stores like Tourneau in New York they're priced about a third of that.

Oh, I know Jonny. I truly like Invicta---probably more than either of you do at this point---but those retail prices are an embarrassment. It actually cheapens the brand in my opinion, when they try to pass off a hundred dollar watch as having been priced at $1000.00, as though it's even in that ballpark. I guess it's pyschological----some people might think they're getting some sort of amazing deal when in fact, they're getting a $130.00 watch for $100.00. There's nothing wrong with that----and if they want to inflate the "retail" price a little bit, I'm fine with that. But not to the extent they do.

Invicta's false advertising - which amounts to trying to present themselves as a luxury brand selling their wares for discount prices - is part of what annoys watch aficionados.

My next door neighbor has three teenage sons, one of whom is still a student at the school. He came over last winter and, knowing my watch fetish, wanted my opinion on a watch gift for his father. He was shocked at the "amazing deals" on Amazon. When he showed me what he was looking at, it was Invicta, of course.

So their dishonest advertising fools people that don't know watches, at least. I can't remember what he ended up buying, but he and his brothers could only spend about $100-150 total, so the Seikos I was trying to steer him towards were a bit too much.

Jonny: My guess is that Invicta has stayed with this strategy because it works. I really wish they would just sell their watches without the inflated "suggested retails." It's okay to inflate it a little bit----almost everyone does that---but not to the extent that they do. It's just silly. As for your neighbors----an Invicta would be a fine choice. They make some great looking watches that generally work well. For gifts, they're excellent----nice packaging and all.
