I've bought a ton of stuff from Amazon, but they had such a defective first batch of 909X's that I wouldn't go near them again. I got two very defective units, so enough was enough. I finally bought a perfect 909X from Radiolabs.

I have a feeling that returned items to Amazon go around and around, with several people receiving the identical flawed products, until some one is unfortunate enough to keep one.

Amazon is dumping shortwave radios b/c nobody wants yesterday's technology. Too many international broadcasters have left the airwaves, so who cares!

That's a great price on the Sangean, but I've heard too many negative things about that series to risk two hundred dollars (or to risk any serious money for that matter). Tim's experience isn't uncommon. Seems to me, these radios are running at least half bad, if not a higher percentage of defects.

Shortwave radio is definitely a limited hobby these days, but there's still enough interest for a few companies to continue to offer new models - Tecsun and Sangean being just two. And when I scan the shortwave frequencies, I still find programming worth listening to. It isn't all Brother R. G. Stair!

Angelo

I agree Tim. I still play with my shortwave radios periodically. I enjoy scanning and I do find programming worth listening to. Do you like the sideband?

Tim

Angelo -

Yes, I use SSB for several purposes. For certain AM stations that have a distorted signal, it can tune them in better. I also listen to the Hams for local information, especially about area weather or even storm damage. Once I was able to learn that a nearby reservoir had overflowed during a storm long before the media reported it. So it does have its uses. And there's no denying its value during emergencies.
