My wife's next laptop might be a chromebook/netbook. You just can't beat the price and, unlike me, she doesn't need much storage (I have 116 GB of music files on my laptop). The one she is using now is my last one, which was damaged but still works.

I am so bad about laptops. Since I purchased my first laptop back around 1994 - a used black-and-white IBM, which ran Windows 3.1 - I have probably gone through, I don't know, a dozen? The longest I've gotten out of any of them is maybe 3 years. I don't have a desktop, use the laptop a lot (too much) and am not very careful. I usually bring it into the kitchen and listen to music, NPR, or watch an episode of Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm while making dinner.

I've lost laptops to a wide number of reasons, a few involving my daughters: dropped, motherboard fried from CD tray jamming, beer spillage, etc.

I've had my current laptop, a 14" Asus Ultrabook, for almost a year and a half and I'm hoping to get at least three years total out of it. We'll see what the options are then, but I've always wanted to get a Macbook Pro. They're what, $1100? That's two watches.

I have a Samsung Chromebook but have yet to dive in to the "total Google" that this would require. This years big computing decision was to go "all Mac" and ditch the PC. I am cautiously optimistic about the Chromebook. It's only real flaw so far is a non-standard (ie non USB mini, micro, etc) charging plug.

The key to remember is that they "don't have security or malware issues" YET.
