Facebook nauseates me but somehow it seems like a necessary evil.

"...the expulsion of a fascist leader..." Well, look at it this way, for every episode of jubilation over deposing a fascist leader, there was once jubilation for empowering said fascist leader. Look around the world and see it repeating itself. So being happy getting Facebook likes and comments, in a relative sense, is a pretty good thing!

We've become so isolated from human forms of communication thanks to technology, that we don't really feel fulfilled. Communication has become standardised by large software companies that provide tools for the masses, not individuals. As a result, when our existence is acknowledged even by something as small and superficial as a "like" or "poke", we feel good about it. For a few fleeting moments we stand out from the herd.

Agreed Ulysses, though I must say, getting a "poke" irritates me a little. Getting a "like" is okay, but has become too routine. It's when someone comments on a post, or comments on a comment, that is must fulfilling (wow, how the mighty have fallen if being acknowledged by a stupid comment in response to a stupid comment on Facebook is "fulfilling" but I'm guilty as charged).

I don't know about you, but I've never ousted a fascist leader or cured a deadly disease. Even if I had the power to do such things, I could hardly expect to do so more than once or twice in a lifetime.

If you wait for such major events before you can be happy, you're going to be miserable for a long, long time.

Ulysses

Depends on who has poked you. If it's that cute girl you like to flirt with, then it's not irritating, and if it's someone who does irritate you, perhaps they should be put on one of those "not a very close friend" lists. Alternatively, you can simply ignore their poke and it blocks them from sending any others.

Speaking of happiness, somebody got a steal on this:
