The Problem with the Grundig S450DLX: Noise

The problem with the Grundig S450 was the noise. It sequels as you tune and spots on the AM/MW dial have a ton of self generated noise. What it will pull in without the added noise is actually on par with the Sony pocket radio you see everywhere for $10 or so..not bad, but very average.
FM I didn't bother much with.

The SW bands overload with an longwire unless you turn the RF gain down to the point where it's piratically deaf. AM and FM stations bleed in all over the dial on every SW band.
I wanted so very much to like that radio, but it just had too many faults.
However it did survive a fire. I'll give it that much.

Rarely used and bought new, my Eton E5 is on the selling block today, starting at $65 with original AC adapter and manual but no box. Aside from slight scuff marks on glass screen, everything looks new.

With twin toddlers running around, operational portable radios are not a big part of my household these day.

Does the $78 Sangean RCR-3 Have the Same 3-Inch Speaker as the $126 Sangean WR-2?

The Sangean RCR-3 specs says it has a 3-inch speaker, the same size as the speaker on the Sangean WR-2. Considering the RCR-3's smaller footprint and lower cost, that would make it appealing. However, I notice its atomic function gets some customer reviews reporting more glitches than are observed with the WR-2.

With my 6 year plus old WR-2, I have to DeOxit the headphone jack about once every two weeks or so because the sensor doesn't tell the speaker to turn on when my earbuds have been removed from the jack. So I've been keeping my eye on a bedside radio replacement if the problem deteriorates.

After Pablo commented that the new Eton Mini radio is a "fiasco," I looked it up on Amazon and found that several quality control problems elicited the Eton Product Manager to apologize on open comments so consumers can see them. Seems like the radio wasn't ready to be released.

Amazon Selling the New Eton NGWFB Field Radio with RDS and SW for $123.77

 

 

I have to confess I'm tempted to pull the trigger on the new Eton Field Radio with RDS, SW, and 50 memories (same configuration as the C.Crane-SW?). Power comes from included AC adapter or 4 D batteries.

I should add there is a skeptical part of me that suspects this new Eton Field radio is just a rebadged $59 Grundig S450DLX with RDS added to it. I doubt the Eton Field radio is worth the extra $65, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Seiko SNAD11 Arctura May be an Enduring Classic

I first saw the Seiko SNAD11 Arctura about 5 or 6 six years ago. I don't know if it's old-new stock or what but I do know it's still available for about $300 on eBay. I liked it when I first saw it and I still do. This could be a sleeper Seiko in all black at a decent price.

And I'd buy an extended warranty. I just don't know if one is out there, so this time around I got a $279 Kenmore. I'll be lucky if this one lasts me 7-10 years.

One of my students works at a nice restaurant in Hermosa Beach. She says there will be kids, mostly toddlers, running around and ruining the other patrons' meals while their parents ignore them because they're too busy having a good time. At one point, my student told the class, "These parents need to step it up."

I've heard kids in other countries don't act like rude little narcissists. Are American parents uniquely narcissistic and thereby creating the only brats in the world?

And what should restaurants do who want these narcissists' business?
