Certain Watch Styles Can Get Away with Being as Huge as 57mm Across the Bezel

Let's face it. Wearing a watch with a 57mm bezel is a formidable prospect. Some watches, if not most, could look ridiculous in a clownish kind of way. But I propose that the military styles seen in Panerai, U-Boat, Hamilton, and this Tauchmeister T0215 show that 57mm is very big indeed but not crazy big. I think this video makes my case:

I read Allen Kurzweil's autobiographical essay "Whipping Boy" in The New Yorker with great interest and heart break. A 12-year-old sociopath at Kurzweil's boarding school in Geneva went on a campaign of terror against the 10-year-old, including whippings, psychological torment, and having one of his sycophants steal Kurzweil's Omega Seamaster and throw it out a window. The watch was never found. This watch was given to the boy after his father, the original owner of the Omega, died of cancer when Kurzweil was five.

The good news: Forty years later, Kurzweil tracked down his sociopath and in many ways conquered his demons. More good news: Forty years later his wife and son bought Kurzweil "an extravagant gift" which he wears on his wrist. I'm betting it's an Omega.

Kurzweil's story will be published as a book in January.

Pulled the Trigger on a Tauchmeister Weinmar Military Watch

I was on the prowl for something akin to a military or field watch. I was looking at the Hamilton King Pilot species at 46mm but wasn't sure about the price, especially after reading that the lume was mediocre and that the leather band was cheap. So I turned to something less than a third of the price, a Tauchmeister Weinmar. I like its big Arabic numerals and open dial styling. It should arrive in a couple of weeks from Canada.

Let's Get a Real Bezel Measurement, Please, of the Seiko Tuna

Calling the Seiko Tuna SBBN017 and Seiko SBDL021 48mm is very misleading. These are mid-size watches. I just taped-measured both bezels and both are 45mm. That's what I thought. They look like 45mm and indeed they are. Let's not call them 48mm.

Bloomberg News reports the slumping sales of sports cars since 2008 and "no recovery in sight." BMW, Audi, and others are hit hard. Rich people have other vehicle choices that are more appealing than a small convertible.
