Wait, ignore that last one - that's a silly re-creation - this is the one:

Careful adjustment with a hammer works best.

I'm wagering there's a damaged bit in the boot sector of the hard drive, so once it's reformatted, it'll run beautifully.

StarHalo,

If that's true, shouldn't it be possible to connect the hard drive to a USB adapter, so any needed data files can be copied to the new Mac?

I've done this with Windows PCs before.

That's what happened to my laptop. I bought a new hard drive, had a techy friend load Ubuntu onto it, and then was able to copy all of my files over from the old hard drive.

Jeff, in this day and age, I highly recommend using some kind of cloud for important files. I have all my writing and teaching files in Dropbox, which is quite useful because I can bring my tablet to class and access any notes I need there.

Yes, your first recourse when a hard drive stops responding should be to get it to a geek who can try for the data. Failing that, if it's a physical drive failure, you can trash that drive and replace it with a new one, which is still only a ~$200 process. Recovering data from a physically failed drive can be done, but it's ~$500 with no guarantees, so it'd better be some extremely important data..

Having been trained as a geologist and geophysicist, if I were absolutely sure the drive couldn't be recovered I would erase it with repeated applications of a rock pick. The hard rock (igneous) design would be preferable to the soft rock type in this application.

But as others have said, there's a good chance somebody can recover it for you. Don't whack it until you're SURE.
