A self imposed hiatus is the wrong way of going about this. "Cold turkey" might work for some people who are trying to quit smoking---but it won't work for watch buying. I think the compulsion needs to be managed, not abolished---because abolishing it might lead to an implosion of purchasing. You can't "make deals with yourself" on stuff like this. You have to gradually refine your habit---and in a lot of ways, you are way ahead of me. You have become very selective with what you buy. That means far, far fewer impulse buys. You ponder your purchases more carefully and seem to be cognizant of how any new purchase will integrate into your rotation of watches. Conversely, I still fall victim to seeing "a great deal" on a watch and grab it----and just figure I can always gift it, or sell it, or whatever---if it doesn't meet my expectations or if I find something similar that's better a week later. For me, it means a lot of purchases, but a lot less spent on each transaction. You are much more careful, but buying a higher caliber of watch. But your instinct will pay dividends later---because you are controlling quantity in a way that I haven't been able to.

By the way, by "implosion of purchasing" I meant that you would go wild and go on a buying binge. I think I should have said "explosion" of purchasing.

Good stuff, Angelo. I think you are right, that gradual refinement is the way to go, balancing self-restraint with occasional and we'll chosen indulgence.

By the way, cold turkey didn't work for me in quitting smoking. What worked was gradually tapering off. But even then you've eventually got to go cold turkey, but it is a lot easier going from 3 a day than from a pack or two a day.

My question is, was time a factor? See, if the watch was heavily discounted but for a limited time, then it's understandable if you decided to break the hiatus to grab it. If, however, there was no special offer and you could've just waited the few months and purchased it then, that could be seen as something of a failure.
