If it were me I'd just run it on a back of 8 (preferably rechargeable) D cells. With the max current draw being just an amp and a half it should run for quite a long time. It does kinda kill the table radio idea, though.
Why batteries? Even with a normal transformer type power supply you're still going to get noise coming in though the AC line. It won't be as bad as all of the garbage a switchmode puts off, but it'll be there just the same.

Or you could run it off of a car battery for about 47 years. Good luck trying to get that one past the xyl, though...lol
I am seriously thinking about turning an old car radio into a table set. Why? It's shielded and takes a coax line for the antenna input. You could put an antenna (coil or wire) outside away from power lines and all of the noise producing stuff in the house and run coax in to the radio. If a radio is going to be stationary you may as well make the best of it.
What about FM? I'm thinking one of these up an antenna mast (the mast itself being the ground..ie to make up for the lack of car chassis that is usually the other half of the antenna)...

Laugh if you want, but that cheap antenna is the best car antenna available today. The "booster coil" makes all the difference in the wold on AM.
