..but it takes 24 hours for a new fridge to get down to working temperature, so if you buy one today, it won't be ready for tomorrow's outage. Ideally, using the fridge you have now, you should be freezing large containers of water so you'll have large blocks of ice to get you through tomorrow.

Gary

I had mentioned to Jeff that I keep three frozen 1-gallon Crystal Geyser water bottles in my freezer. If there is an extended power failure, I move two of the ice blocks into the fridge and leave one in the freezer, basically converting both of them to old-school iceboxes.

On another point, I'm not a big fan of computerized appliances. The turning off the breaker for 10 minutes is presumably to reboot the computer in the fridge. I've had to unplug one of my LCD TVs on occasion to reboot it and make it responsive. In TVs, the computer is probably inevitable these days, but not all fridges, washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc. are computerized yet.

So what happened with this, how'd the outage go?

It went fine except the backup battery in the cable modum from Verizon is dead. The battery weighs 20 pounds and costs 150 dollars to replace. The electric company is coming back to turn off the electricity again but they don't know when. I need to contact Verizon about that battery.

Gary

Jeff,

Do you have Verizon FIOS for broadband and phone?

herculodge

Yeah, that's it. Pricey but better than Time Warner.

Gary

If you'd like to get rid of robocalls on your FIOS VoIP (Voice over IP) phone, you should try Nomorobo, which is free. My friend set it up on his FIOS VoIP phone last week, and he's received zero robocalls since then. Nomorobo was recommended by Consumer Reports in their September issue. It only works with VoIP phone systems, of which Verizon FIOS is one.
