Perhaps it's ultimately of benefit that most students drop out, leaving you to give more attention to those who really want to learn. I saw this sort of thing happen on my first degree. About half were left that started in year one. What baffles me is that, given how grand an undertaking it is, with associated major financial commitments, how so many students can even consider dropping a subject (in the case of a university degree). About the disparity between different students on their "default" education levels, it might be of help if there were the option of taking some remedial classes in the basics, to allow the kids who knew they had a problem to catch up. When I was taking my first advanced math classes, it was painfully obvious that those students with a private education in their past understood more than the guys like me. University is the amphitheatre where students of different ability are forced together to clash in brutal combat - you have to get up to speed fast or get mauled.

"Where students of different ability are forced together to clash in brutal combat--you have to get up to speed fast or get mauled." Now I know whey the Hunger Games is so popular.
