That is really good information, thanks Gary. I've seen dozens of negative feedback reports from people with GW-M5610s that have faulty auto EL backlights so I knew about that before I ordered. I have the same feature on a Pro-Trek PRW-3500 which works fairly well. That said, it appears that Casio has this problem on the GW-M5610 with different production lots over several years -- some have it, and some don't. I will be sure to check that immediately out of the box with the Tilt sensor test. That said, it if doesn't work I don't think it will be a deal breaker and I may not want to deal with the hassle of sending it back to Amazon for a replacement that could very well have the same exact problem, like several people have reported. Like my other G-Shocks, the backlight can still be activated with a button push so I'll be no worse off if the auto function doesn't work. There are also reports that it begins to work after many months of wear, so I figure it's all a crapshoot that doesn't detract overall from the positive attributes of the watch.

Lee: Sometimes just shaking the watch along the up/down directions of the dial can free up the little ball that can get stuck in the tilt mechanism, preventing it from activating the light. I have six G-Shocks and one Pathfinder (ProTrek) with Auto-EL, and they all work fine.

The GW-M5610-1 arrived today and auto-EL works like a champ. Yay!
What a neat watch! After years of having big honking G-Shocks on my wrist, it's refreshing to be able to wear something so svelte that's still tough as nails and every bit a G. I am really impressed.

I'm glad you like it, Lee, and that the tilt sensor works. The squares are certainly more compact than almost any other style of G-Shock. My most compact Gs are the GW-M850-1 (digital) and the AWG-M100A (ana-digi), both of which are round.
