I currently own 4 very stunning mechanical watches: Seiko SBDC067 Coral Monster, SBDC065 Cyan Blue Diver and shown below, the Seiko SBDC051 Black Dial Diver and SBDC053 Blue Dial Diver. I'm considering unloading my automatics and replacing the solar models, most likely Eco-Drives. I'm leaning toward "Precision Instruments." I am tiring of the setting of automatic watches and all the fussing. Could the romance be ending?
I'd be surprised if your romance with automatics is really ending. It's that whole "human body connection to the watch" that makes them so cool.

I used to feel that way, but I'm getting lazy and I am more interested in accuracy these days. The only auto standing in my collection is my beloved Seiko SBDC065 Twilight Blue Diver.

The thing is----while you were scaling back your collection (which as I recall, was once in the dozens---probably around 50?), I was going nuts collecting. At this point, with maybe 200 watches, a large number of them are dead because the batteries need to be replaced. All of my automatics are fine----but the quartz watches sit unused until I have time to deal with battery replacements.

I find quartz to be unappealing in that regard. I have only 2 quartz Tunas, no more. For me, the best of all solutions is solar quartz. I only buy solar from now on.

Ahh....makes sense. Almost a best of both worlds. I still enjoy the complications and basically the movement itself of a mechanical or automatic---but yeah, for accuracy and long life, the solar option is a good one.

I've reached the point where I don't want to worry about service costs. If I pay a grand for a watch, I want to trust its accuracy and longevity.

On top of solar, one could add (low frequency or GPS) radio control as well. Then, the watches are always on time and even toggle DST all by themselves.

I do like the radio control Citizen Promaster Sky models a lot.

This post has made me question the nature of reality.
