Forgive me for posting this on Christmas, but my heart is heavy today. Many who struggle with the Christian God, myself included, are terrified of going to hell even though we read persuasive arguments against theism such as Elizabeth Anderson's masterpiece "If God Is Dead, Is Everything, Is Everything Permitted?"
I feel this writer's pain as he/she describes hell fear in the face of struggling with the Christian God. A now liberal Christian and author Lee Harmon writes about his depression when he obsessed over eternal hell.
The intellect goes one way, but the soul has its own ideas and is still trapped in fearing hell. I admire Julia Sweeney for letting go of God and fear of hell. And it appears Bart Ehrman isn't cowering in fear of hell either, but I wonder if he'll return to his faith someday. I'm also finding some hope in this "Why I'm Not Afraid of Hell" post on Patheos.
At the bottom of this Patheos link, the writer discusses Pascal's Wager with some hilarity.
It appears you need a emotional epiphany to deal with this. You need to understand that submitting to a god for reasons of fear and raw power alone will not be a true conversion but a state of bondage to an abusive entity.
This video critiques the literal belief in eternal hell:
