Bart Ehrman's God's Problem, a refutation of sorts on theodicy and an argument that suffering is senseless, might make a good counterargument assignment in my Critical Thinking class. I was surprised to see these critical assessments of Ehrman's polemic by James Woods in The New Yorker and even more suprising the vitriolic attack in Chris Hedges' A Hollow Agnosticism. Neither writer is a Christian apologist though Hedges is critical of The New Atheism.
